UNW softball prepares for Florida training trip

This season, the University of Northwestern – St. Paul women’s softball team looks forward to a promising season both on and off the field.

According to the pre-season polls, the Northwestern softball team is expected to rank third in their conference. The team kicked off their season with a game in the Dundas Dome on Feb. 23. Their next two games will be in the Rochester Dome before they head to Florida to begin their spring training games.

The thing that makes this team remarkable is their behind-the-scenes support for each other and commitment to maintaining a loving and Christ-centered community.

UNW students help out at Super Bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is always a very important day in America, but it was even more important in Minnesota this year. The Super Bowl took place Feb. 4 in Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium. Nearly 1 million people attended the 10 days of Super Bowl events. About a quarter of the people who attended came from out of town and from around 100 different countries. When there are this many people who are going to be attending an event there needs to be some help. For the big game in Minneapolis, thousands of people signed up to be volunteers. Countless people applied and many were turned down. For many students at the University of Northwestern St. Paul, this wasn’t the case. Around 60 students had the opportunity to volunteer for various events including Super Bowl live, skyway host, ticket takers and security. Many of these students were even able to attend some of the game.

Women’s track and field team grows together through Bible study

The goal of many sports teams is to build unity and tight team bonds. However, this can be more challenging on a team with mostly individual events like track and field. Over Christmas break, three women on the track team had a vision to strengthen friendships and create a stronger team by beginning a small group Bible study for members of the women’s team. Captain Chloe Gault and teammates Hannah Gatton and Danielle Jibben decided to have the Bible study meet for an hour on Friday nights as a final “pre-meet” gathering for the women to grow together, be vulnerable in a safe environment and pray for each other.

UNW lacrosse team to join Midwest Lacrosse Conference

The University of Northwestern – St. Paul lacrosse teams have achieved an important milestone. The men’s and women’s teams will officially be added to the Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference respectively, effective during the 2019 season. Colleges and universities in both these conferences are Concordia University Wisconsin, Concordia University Chicago, Cornell College, and Monmouth College among others. The women’s conference also includes UNW’s Snelling Avenue neighbor, Hamline University. The 2018 season will be the teams’ final seasons in the independent conference.
